Back to school amid construction in Waverly

WAVERLY, N.Y. - Students, faculty and staff in the Waverly Central School District started their school year Wednesday amid the district's continuing Capital Assets Preservation Project.

The $43 million renovation project includes upgrades and renovations to all of the district's buildings.

The construction "hasn't been a problem," Superintendent Mike McMahon said, with things going well the first day. McMahon credited the district staff with a job well done in getting things ready to go for the first day on a limited time table, as construction work kept teachers out of their classrooms for most of the summer.

Tioga Central School District opens for classes

TIOGA CENTER, N.Y. - The 2010-2011 school year got off to a good start in the Tioga Central School District, according to the district superintendent.

"Things looked like they were running pretty smoothly," Superintendent Scot Taylor said.

There where no major transportation glitches on the first day, Taylor said.

Enrollment in the district is about the same as last year, he said, with around 1,125 students. Taylor said an exact enrollment number won't be available for a few days, as the number of students usually fluctuates somewhat in the first few days of classes.

Western Bradford Notebook: Lucky lotto scratcher

TROY - It was a lucky morning Wednesday for one man at the Pump 'n Pantry in Troy.

He's now $100,000 richer.

Of course, that's before taxes.

But he will definitely have some extra cash.

That's because he was a big lottery winner.

Roger Riddle, the store manager, said the man who won wishes to remain anonymous. But Riddle did share some details.

The ticket, he said, was an "Emerald 8s" scratch-off ticket and the man bought it at 6:30 a.m.

Hinchey formalizes campaign for re-election; accepts invitation for public debate

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y. - Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) officially kicked off his campaign on Wednesday to continue representing the people of New York's 22nd Congressional District, and announced that he would accept an invitation by Republican Candidate George Phillips to participate in a public debate.

To announce his campaign, Hinchey made stops at the Broome County Courthouse in Binghamton, N.Y., then made his way to Owego, N.Y. and then Ithaca. And while Hinchey was campaigning in Owego, Phillips was making his way through the Southern Tier as well.

Marcellus Shale production data exceeds expectations

Marcellus Shale gas wells in Northeast and Northcentral Pennsylvania led the state in natural gas production last year, exceeding even industry predictions about the promise of the gas-rich shale, according to well production data released for the first time by the state.

In the 12 months between July 1, 2009 and June 30, the state's 632 producing Marcellus wells released 180 billion cubic feet of gas - an amount that more than doubles Pennsylvania's annual natural gas production from the years before the shale exploration began.

One injured in roll-over

One man was injured in a roll-over accident around 10 p.m. Tuesday on Route 187 in Orwell Township, said Rome Fire Chief Jon Park.

He said the four-door car ended up upside down in about three feet of water in a creek. According to Park, firefighters had to extricate the driver, whose name wasn't available.

He said they cut two passenger doors and the center post between the doors to free the man. The man was the only person in the vehicle, Park said.

Tioga United Way to kick-off 2011 Campaign

On Sept. 14, beginning at 5:30 p.m., the Tioga United Way will kick-off their 2011 campaign at the Tioga Downs Race Track and Casino located in Nichols, N.Y.
