Monday was a day of celebration in Nichols, N.Y., as the 99th annual Old Home Day, sponsored by the Nichols Ro-Ki Community Club, was held.
There was lots of entertainment at the event, said Ro-Ki President Barbara Westfall, with Bucky Moon and the Country Connection performing. There was a lot for kids to do, too, she said, including a bouncy castle and an antique train ride that the kids "absolutely love."
The state Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the source of methane gas that bubbled up in the North Branch of the Susquehanna River near Sugar Run and six private water wells in Wilmot Township last week.
The sites are in the same general location as two other instances of methane contamination involving a beaver pond and a residential water well, and Chesapeake Energy is evaluating its natural gas wells in the area, according to DEP Secretary John Hanger.
TROY - The Troy Area School District has made some busing changes to address the traffic congestion in Troy Borough.
And Sue Jackson, the district's transportation director, said she thinks the measures are working.
First, she said, the district has take action regarding the number of buses that go to W.R. Croman Elementary School, located in the borough, in the afternoon.
According to Jackson:
In the past, the district transferred elementary students from Croman - including those who were to ride in buses going south down Route 14 - to the middle school and high school so they could transfer to their home buses.
TOWANDA - Towanda Borough has begun to advertise for a developer for part of the 400 block of Main Street, a project that would be partially funded with the $5 million in state grant money that has been earmarked for the redevelopment of the borough's downtown corridor.
Legal ads seeking proposals from interested developers have been placed in The Daily Review.
At the most recent meeting of the Towanda Borough Council, Towanda Borough Manager Tom Fairchild Jr. discussed the $5 million that was earmarked for Towanda's downtown corridor in the recently passed state budget and which would be provided through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).
HARRISBURG - Decisions about expanding natural gas pipelines in Pennsylvania would be removed from the hands of federal officials under a bill facing a House hearing today.
The Consumer Affairs Committee will take testimony on a measure to create an interstate compact involving Pennsylvania and one or two other states with authority to approve or reject applications to expand pipeline to accommodate development of Marcellus Shale gas deposits.
No new information was available as of Tuesday as the Bradford County coroner waited for the results of toxicology tests before making a ruling on the cause of the death of 49-year-old Patricia Hoagland of Towanda.
On Thursday, her body was found at a swimming area in Franklin Township. The death is considered suspicious by the state police.
Hoagland's body was found in the early afternoon on Thursday at the Lamoka swimming area on the Schrader Creek in Franklin Township, according to the state police at Towanda and the coroner.
Name of prize winner at Sullivan County Fair was incorrect
The 15-year-old boy who won grand champion prizes for his swine and goat at the Sullivan County Fair this year is Terry Shadduck of Shunk. The name of the boy was incorrect in a story in Tuesday's Daily Review.
