LeRaysville celebrates Labor Day with 5K run
The event’s softball tournament, Chinese auction, and karaoke contests have all helped to keep attendance up at the event, which began Saturday, LeRaysville-Pike Fire Chief John Keegan said. During the late afternoon on Sunday, Keegan estimated that approximately 1,000 people had attended the fair so far. The event’s annual parade, which begins at 10:30 a.m. today in LeRaysville, is usually about a half-hour long, he said. It features fire trucks, floats and other entries. The Labor Day Celebration raises money for the fire company. "It’s our big fundraiser," Keegan said, adding that it looks like the event will raise this year what it usually does, $15,000 to $18,000. Attendee Jackie Whitehead of LeRaysville said he enjoys watching the event’s softball tournament, which takes place on all three days at the event. "The Chinese auction is fantastic," she added. The winner of the groups/duos category in the event’s karaoke contest was Brenda Chilson of Towanda and Kathy Blair. The winner of the 13- to 17-year-old category in the karaoke contest was Brittany Johnson, and winner in the 12-and-under category was Makenzie Vanderpool. The overall male winner in the event’s 5K run was Kent Upham, and the overall female winner was Mimi Dewing. The karaoke contest continues this afternoon for people ages 18 and older. A horseshoe tournament starts at 2 p.m. and the drawing for the Chinese auction starts at 5 p.m. There will also be a ham dinner at the community hall after the parade.
