77 Bradford County students learn through action
FOR THE REVIEW
On Oct. 7, the Athens, Canton, Northeast, and Troy school districts agriculture classes participated in the forestry and land use career development event at Mt. Pisgah.
For the forestry portion students completed 4 different areas. These areas included tree identification, tree volume and marketing, forestry equipment identification, and common Pennsylvania forestry knowledge. Tree identification included naming trees based on their leaves and bark. To determine the volume of a stand of timber, the students used Biltmore Sticks. They measured the diameter and height to determine the board footage. Some of the equipment they identified included axes, compasses, abney levels, paint guns, and glass prisms.
The last portion of the forestry event was common forestry knowledge. Things asked of the students ranged from history, current events, and applied forestry skills. The second career development event that students partook in was Land Use. After being informed about general land use criteria by Mr. Rich Gulyas of the conservation district and Mr. Gary Otis a retired Soil Conservation Service employee, the students evaluated four soil pits. They judged the pits to determine class and subclass based on the best use of the land. They also identified soil textures and slope of the land.
There were 77 students who participated from the four schools. The top four participants in forestry were Shawn Allis(Athens), Chris Warren(Athens), Casey Hall(Canton), and Brady Seeley(Canton). The top four participants in the Land Use event were Casey Hall(Canton), Paige Cook(Troy), Janice Jackson(Canton), and Josh Tadesco(Troy).
The students all had an enjoyable time and said that they learned a lot. Canton senior Brady Seeley commented, "I'm proud of how Canton is doing this year compared to last year. We've improved a lot in the last year. I'm looking forward to our future CDE's though out the year as we keep practicing."
