A lady named Towanda...
TOWANDA - We all know we live in a historical area, living in Bradford County. Today I met a lady who made "history" by being named after history.
My phone rang on this Friday afternoon with a call from the Central Bradford County Chamber of Commerce. There was someone I should come down to meet at The Weigh Station Cafe who was visiting the area.
That was how I ended up meeting Towanda.
When I stopped at The Weigh Station, I had been told she had just left, but I met up with Towanda Lawler, and her husband Warren, when I saw their vehicle from Missouri parked on Main Street. The folks who had met her at The Weigh Station said to keep watch for Missouri plates.
Traveling through the area, Towanda had wanted to learn more about her namesake. It seems that her great-grandfather's family had been from Bradford County. When her mom was expecting back in 1958, her grandmother had said this area of Bradford County was so beautiful, that if a girl was born she should be called Towanda.
Towanda grew up in Missouri. Her grandmother, a sprightly 94 year old, always wanted her to see the area, and is presently working on a scrapbook and their family genealogy. Their roots go back to the Pennsylvania Dutch.
The lady Towanda really likes this area, the historic homes and buildings. She and her husband plan to come back again, visit, and "stay awhile."
Now I can tell people that I met a bit of "living" history right in downtown Towanda!
