After-Christmas sales bring out local shoppers on Saturday

Local department stores were busy Saturday, as shoppers took advantage of after-Christmas sales, used their Christmas gift cards, and returned items that they got as Christmas gifts.

The J.C. Penney store in Wysox Township opened at 5 a.m. on Saturday, which was five hours earlier than normal, and featured "doorbuster" sales that day, said Patty Langer, a department supervisor at the store.

"We've been very busy," she said.

The Peebles department store in Sayre was also very busy on Saturday, with items marked down as much as 80 percent, said Paula Vogt, store manager.

Christina Mellon of Philadelphia said she and her sister-in-law, Loretta Bernhardt of Wyalusing, had been "all over" in the Bradford County area looking for sales on Saturday.

Mellon said a lot of things are on sale, including clothing, housewares, and toys.

"A lot of things are on clearance," Mellon said. "It's like a Black Friday-type thing, but it's after Christmas. This year it was Black Saturday."

"Things are a lot cheaper" on the day after Christmas, said Tonia Chaapel of Canton, who was shopping in the Bradford Towne Center in Wysox Township on Saturday after visiting a mall in Lycoming County earlier in the day.

She said her mother was able on Saturday to buy the same boots that she had bought in the past, but for $10 cheaper.

"The economy is tight now, so you'll take advantage of all the sales you can," said Gary Eddy of Liberty Corners, who was returning a Christmas gift at the Bradford Towne Center on Saturday.

Eddy said his wife was shopping Saturday because of the sales. "She starts Christmas shopping right after Christmas," he said.

Janine Dodge of Towanda, who was shopping Saturday at the Wysox Kmart, said she was looking for toys on sale to "hoard" for birthday and Christmas gifts during the coming year.

Most shoppers are drawn to after Christmas Sales because some items are marked down as low 75% off, they are a lot cheaper and also there is a huge clearance going on with retailers getting ready for new year.
