Area feels wintry chill

It's been a cold weekend in the area.

In Towanda, a local weather observer reported to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, N.Y. a reading of 11 degrees Sunday, according to Joanne LaBounty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The weather service received the report around 7 a.m. Sunday.

Wayne Vanderpool, the weather observer who made the report, said the temperature wasn't a record. The record for Sunday was 15 degrees below zero set in 1899, he noted.

The wind chill made it seem like 5 to 10 degrees below zero, according to LaBounty.

She said the winds were anywhere fro 15 to 20 mph in the early morning Sunday, and they started to diminish as the day went on in the Valley locations.

The weather is the result of a trough hanging over the Northeast that's bringing cold air from Canada, she said.

"It's not unusual for winter," she added.

LaBounty suggested that people wear work gloves and a hat when outside and keep extra clothes in the car in the event that they are needed. Carrying a cellular phone to use in case an emergency is also a good idea, she said.

Here is the forecast for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service:

Today: Scattered snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 24. Wind chill values as low as zero. West wind between 8 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

What good is a cellular phone when they only work in a few place. I think with all the laws that we have you should be able to get cell service anywhere but that is not the case. I think that all companys should be made to let you use there towers. Some of the companys like ATT will not let you use there towers unless you use them as a carrier. Too bad the phone service is not all set up the same. You get out is the sticks and you are lucky if you can get anything.

Boldness must arise locally to save roads
