TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y. - On Dec. 12, as part of a nationwide Wreaths Across America ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and at 400 national cemeteries across the United States including Elmira and Bath, area residents in the Valley laid wreaths at four local cemeteries.

The Friends of the Waverly Cemetery (FOWC) and the Waverly VFW Post Color Guard went to four cemeteries in Waverly starting at noon with Glenwood, then to Factoryville/East Waverly and then St. James and Forest Home. Wreaths were placed at each cemetery.

A ceremony was also held at noon on Dec. 12 by Sayre Eastside Ascension Ukrainian Church at the Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Athens, west of Tioga Point Cemetery.

Following the wreath laying at local cemeteries, the group then went to the War Memorial at Muldoon Park and the VFW Post Memorial. A wreath was placed at each by the color guard, a prayer was read and a salute to honor all deceased veterans.

Wreaths Across America recognizes the contributions of our fallen soldiers and those who served by a moving sight of a cemetery adorned with wreaths of remembrance.
