Athens advances to semi-finals in Scholarship Challenge
In what organizer Chuck Carver termed "one of the most exciting matches we ever had," the Athens High School Scholarship Challenge team beat Elk Lake on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals.
Athens defeated Elk Lake 100 to 90 during the Scholarship Challenge, Carver said, but it came down to the last question. Before that occurred, Carver said, both teams' 10-point lead went back-and-forth five times because of the difference in the 20-point value of each question.
The winning question for Athens was: "In 1945, U.S. forces occupied this island, which was actually a Tokyo prefecture. Name the site of a famous flag-raising that occurred during its namesake battle." The answer, according to Carver, is "Iwo Jima."
The scores of other matches that occurred during the event were as follows:
- Montrose defeated North Rome Christian School 90 to 70
- Athens defeated Towanda 160 to 40
- Elk Lake defeated Montrose 110 to 60
- Athens defeated Troy 110 to 60
Carver said that Athens will now go on to the semi-finals where they will face Wellsboro on March 27. Two other teams from New York - Owego Free Academy and Tioga Center - will face off against each other. The winners of the semi-finals will compete against each other for the championship.
Terry Bustin, advisor to the Athens team, said it is "really neat" that they have come this far. She said that last year the Athens team managed to do the same thing, and it's really great they were able to do it again this year. Making up the Athens team are: Michael Bernett, Kate Cavazza, Conor Holton, Ian Repko, Matt Johnson and Narek Hovhannesyan, according to Bustin.
"The kids are really proud of themselves," she said.
