A fire struck the second floor of an Athens Borough home Wednesday afternoon, causing damage to the residence.

Athens Borough and Sayre fire departments were dispatched at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday to a structure fire at 108 E. Frederick St. that began in the second floor of the residence.

The fire originated in a second-floor wall and spread to a bathroom and bedroom, said Matt Davidson, assistant fire chief of the Athens Borough Fire Department. The fire totally engulfed the bathroom and caused heat and smoke damage to the entire second floor and some smoke damage to the first floor, Davidson said.

Firefighters had the fire under control in about 30 minutes, Davidson said, with the fire completely out by 5 p.m. The fire did not progress enough for Wednesday's high winds or other environmental factors to affect it, he said.

The cause remained under investigation Wednesday night, but was believed to likely be electrical, Davidson said.

A female occupant and two children were not home at the time of the fire, Davidson said. Athens Borough police assisted the family with housing arrangements Wednesday, he said.

Greater Valley EMS also assisted at the scene with an air truck.
