Athens Science Olympiad team places 1st at Northeast Regional Competition
The Athens Area High School Science Olympiad Team took first place on Wednesday at the Northeast Regional Competition.
According to information provided by Athens Area High School, the team's victory earns them a chance to compete at the state level April 30.
This year's team consisted of: Gabe Duval, Shailly Gaur, Tony Lake, John Soper, Katrina Teeter, Nick Weisbrod, Stephanie Teeter, Abby Slocum, Megan Romaina, John Lockard, Abby Davenport, Cathy Cantolina, Keith Carpenter, Alex Liddane and Ian Riban.
The team placed first in nine events. First-place winners included:
* Lake and Cantolina in Astronomy
* Gaur and Duval in Chemistry Lab
* Carpenter, Soper and Gaur in Experimental Design
* Cantolina and Gaur in Forensics
* Lockard, Davenport and Slocum in Mission Possible
* Stephine Teeter, Andrew Polzella and Carpenter in Mousetrap Vehicle
* Lockard, Soper and Weisbrod in Picture This
* Weisbrod and Lockard in Physics Lab
* Duval and Lockard in Remote Sensing
Second-place finishes included:
* Gaur and Davenport in Anatomy & Physiology
* Katrina Teeter and Duval in Cell Biology
* Katrina Teeter and Romania in Fossils.
* Lake and Liddane in It's About Time
Even though the Harlan Rowe Jr. High team did not make it to the state level, they managed to earn three first-place medals and one second-place medal. Sarah Slocum and Pascal Liddane won a first-place medal in Junk Yard Challenge. Mckaylah Dekay and Sarah Slocum also earned a first-place medal in Can't Judge a Powder. Mitch Orshal and Kathryn Christiansen placed first in Experimental Design. Kaitlyn Gallow and Pascal Liddane placed second in Wright Stuff.
The Athens Area High School team will next travel to Juniata College on April 30 to compete at the state competition.
