Athens successful at Science Olympiad
The Athens Area High School Science Olympiad team travelled to Solon, Ohio to compete at the Solon Science Olympiad Invitational on Saturday.
The Science Olympiad team competed in twenty-three events ranging from biology and chemistry to earth science and physics. The team also had the opportunity to compete in two trial events: Balloon Race and Neuroscience.
The team did very well at the competition and won medals in nine out of the twenty five events. Medals were awarded to the top six places. The following students won medals in the respective events:
Anatomy & Physiology - 5th place medal - Kathryn Christiansen and Julia Wolanski
Experimental Design - 6th place medal - Kathryn Christiansen, Christoph Lackner and Molly Wolanski
Forensics - 5th place medal - Christoph Lackner and Colby Lawton
Gravity Vehicle - 3rd place medal - Pascal Liddane and Molly Wolanski
Optics - 2nd place medal - Joelle Jacoski and Rachel Juhola
Robotic Arm - 3rd place medal - Kaitlyn Gallow and Pascal Liddane
Sounds of Music - 4th place medal - Rachel Juhola and Laura Lockard
Technical Problem Solving - 6th place medal - Christoph Lackner and Alex Liddane
Tower - 3rd place medal - Kaitlyn Gallow and Alex Liddane
The Athens High School Team as a whole finished third in the 2012 Solon Science Olympiad Invitational. The first place team trophy was awarded to Mentor High School from Mentor Ohio. The second place trophy went to Harriton High School from Pennsylvania.
The Solon Invitational hosted 57 teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida.
The team was up against some tough competition including nationally ranked teams. The Athens Science Olympiad teams looks forward to their next competition next
weekend at the Tiger Science Olympiad Invitational near Allentown, Pa. After that the team will compete for a state invitation at the Northeast Regional Science Olympiad Competition at Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, March 7, 2012.
