SAYRE - Aubrey Root of Waverly, N.Y., was born at 7:01 a.m. Friday at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, making her the first baby born in the new decade in Bradford County.

Root, who is the daughter of Maryann Steele, 18, and Dustin Root, 21, of Waverly, N.Y., is doing "fine," said Linda Henry, the unit clerk at the First Impressions Birthing Center at Robert Packer Hospital.

Aubrey Root was not expected to be the first baby of the decade born in the county, since, according to her mother, she was due to be born two weeks after Jan. 1.

But when Maryann Steele began to have contractions at 7:45 a.m. on Dec. 31, the pendulum shifted, and it looked at that time like she might be born too early to be the county's first baby of the decade.

Maryann Steele was brought to Robert Packer Hospital at 11 a.m. on Dec. 31 and stayed there until 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, said Maryann Steele's mother, Lisa Steele of Waverly, N.Y.

"She wasn't dilated enough, so they sent her home" on the afternoon of Dec. 31, Lisa Steele said.

So Maryann Steele and Dustin Root stayed up on New Year's Eve at their home on Fulton Street and watched the ball drop on television as the new decade started.

But by 12:45 a.m. on Jan. 1, "we definitely knew she was in labor," said Lisa Steele, who lives with her daughter and Dustin Root on Fulton Street.

And at that time, Dustin Root drove Maryann Steele to the hospital.

Maryann Steele said her delivery was normal, but that she felt tired on Friday.

Dustin Root said he watched his daughter being born, which is the first child for him and Maryann Steele.

"It was amazing ... seeing your daughter being brought into the world!" he said.

Dustin Root and Maryann Steele said that their daughter is healthy added that they hope she will continue to be healthy and grow up happy.

On Friday afternoon, Aubrey Root, who is 7 pounds, 15 ounces and 21 inches long, was resting with her mother, father and their relatives in Maryann Steele's room in the First Impressions Birthing Center.

That afternoon, Troy Fair Queen Casey Hall and Bradford County First Alternate Dairy Princess Jessica Rockwell paid a visit to Maryann Steele, bringing gifts for her and her family.

Hall's gifts included week-long passes for Maryann Steele and her family members to the 2010 Troy Fair, as well as baby supplies.

Rockwell brought dairy products and dairy recipes for the couple.

Now why would you come here and say something like that? They will get married if and when they want to. Would it really make sense for them to get married only to possibly get divorced down the road? No I didn't think so..now quit being so rude! As long as the baby is loved and taken care of by both parents, it really doesn't matter. Mind your own business!

Carol, I agree with you, but we've been outvoted. I think it's a political plot to put the last ten years behind us as quickly as possible, and move on to better times quicker than the calendar would indicate. Accept it and move on. Being right doesn't always win.

The new decade does not begin until next year. We count 1,2,3,...10. We do not count 0,1,2,...9.
