Barton, N.Y. fire victim identified
Officials have identified the woman killed in a Saturday evening fire in the town of Barton.
Valentene F. Mazzella, 37, became entrapped in the mobile home at 355 Route 34, Lot 7, and was overcome by smoke, according to a release from the Tioga County Sheriff's Office. Mazzella was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mazzella resided in the mobile home with John E. Gerhard, 32, who survived the fire and was transported to Binghamton General Hospital for evaluation, according to police.
Emergency responders were dispatched at about 7 p.m. March 22 to the residence, which was quickly engulfed by flames. Police said the mobile home caught fire due to an overheated pan on the stove in the kitchen.
Waverly-Barton, Lockwood and Sayre fire departments, the Tioga County Sheriff's Department, the Tioga County Fire Investigation Team and Greater Valley EMS responded to the fire.
