A sweet beginning in the Valley

SOUTH WAVERLY - A new bake shop in the Valley aims to offer its customers a taste of something different.

"We have things nobody else has," explained Vickie Suarez, owner of the Rise and Shine Bake Shop, such as artisan breads made from scratch every day, and French-style pastries that people may not be familiar with. The shop has been open since late September, but held an open house/grand opening on Thursday.

The shop offers "Daily Breads," a different variety of bread for each day of the week; and pastries, as well as single-origin coffee, with beans coming from different locations around the world, and organic loose-leaf teas, Vickie Suarez said.

The business is a family operation, with Adrienne Suarez, Vickie Suarez's daughter, at the helm in the kitchen. The staff also includes other family members and close friends, Vickie Suarez said. Adrienne Suarez has worked as a chef in various places, her mother said, including at a college in Virginia, where she loved the baking part of being in the kitchen. After moving back home, she developed "quite a following" selling her baked goods at the Sayre Farmer's Market and other functions, Vickie Suarez said, so the family decided to find a location to establish a bakery.

They set up shop in a two-story house located at the corner of Pitney Street and Keystone Avenue in South Waverly, tearing down a small building that used to house a computer repair store and renovating the house into a bakery, Vickie Suarez said. The process to remodel the building has taken about two years, she said.

"It's a lot of work, but it's very rewarding," Adrienne Suarez said. "It's a chance to try things you never thought you could do."

Adrienne Suarez said she has always felt that eating should be "an experience you remember," and that she tries to create that for people. One of her goals, she said, is to familiarize people with new things, such as the shop's scratch-made pastries, adding that she doesn't compromise when it comes to the quality of ingredients she uses. She will also take special orders, she said, "even things that are off the wall," adding that she has recreated desserts for customers based on their childhood memories.

The Rise and Shine Bake Shop is open from 6:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and is located at the corner of Pitney Street and Keystone Avenue in South Waverly.
