The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced the nominees for the 2012 Business Person of the Year.

This prestigious award is given annually at our United Valley Business Banquet to a deserving person in the Valley who has shown interest in advancing the economic, industrial, professional, cultural and civic welfare of the Greater Valley Area; to encourage the growth of existing industries and businesses while at the same time, giving all proper assistance to any new firms or individuals seeking to relocate in the Greater Valley Area; to support all activities beneficial to the community and go above and beyond their normal job duties. The business must be a Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce Member, but does not have to be the owner of that business. Nominees are listed in alphabetical order.

Nancy Brittain: Ajax X-ray, Inc.:

Nancy has been with Ajax X-ray, Inc. for over 25 years, is part owner and serves as President and Business Manager. Nancy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Elmira College, which she earned while working full time at Ajax X-Ray, Inc. in Sayre. Very active in the Sayre Rotary Club, Nancy served a term as the President in 2009. During that time, she was instrumental in overseeing the renovation of the Sayre Historical Society Museum's office and meeting rooms on the second floor-a very generous Sayre Rotary project. She also serves at the District Level as the Area Representative for the Rotary Foundation and Assistant Governor overseeing five local clubs. Nancy serves as the Chair for the NY-Penn Leadership Advisory Committee and is a member of the Board of the Foundrymen's Group Trust and the Tioga State Bank's Business Development Board. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Guthrie Healthcare System through which she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Sayre House of Hope. A board member of the Sayre Historical Society since 2008, Nancy currently serves the society as treasurer, chair for the publicity committee and the finance committee and as a member of the administrative committee and the events committee. She is an active member of the Athens United Methodist Church where she serves on the SPRC Committee and the Communications Committee. Nancy was born and raised in Bradford County, spending the majority of her life in Athens and Sayre. She has traveled to many places in and outside the United States, but she always looks forward to seeing the hills surrounding her home in the Valley where she lives with her husband Ed.

Cyndie Cooper: Gannon Associates:

Cyndie has worked for Gannon Associates for the past 10 years, and holds her Property and Casualty as well as Life and Health Insurance licenses. She currently holds the position of Communications. Her volunteer activities include 4 years of coaching for Valley Youth Soccer; 2 years of assistant coaching for Athens Little League. Cyndie also owns and operates Yoga101 yoga studio in Athens, PA. She has also taught for the Area Agency on Aging, offering a chair yoga class to the community, as well as volunteering in various local schools introducing children to Yoga. She mentored a Sayre High school student for her senior project, teaching the student the basics of yoga; in turn the student ran a "teen yoga" class at her studio. She is currently the Athens Business Association President and also worked as the community leader at the "Community Garden Project." The garden is planted and maintained by members of the Juvenile Accountability Court. They harvest and sell the produce on the steps of the courthouse in Towanda, with proceeds going towards the program. Her accomplishments include coordination of the First Annual Athens Business Association Street Fair and she was instrumental in community support after the flood in Athens in 2011. She was also involved with the Luminaries in Teaoga Square after the 2011 flood. Cyndie has sponsored and participated, in teams through both Gannon' s and Yoga101, to run a number of 5K's as well as 3 teams in the Wineglass Marathon. She believes that her involvement in the community must extend beyond the hours spent working. "It is vital to get to know our neighbors and what we all want to see in our community", states Cooper.

Jeff Paul: Jeff Paul Plumbing, Heating & Electric:

Jeff is the owner of Jeff Paul Plumbing, Heating & Electric located in Sayre. He has been in business for over 35 years. Jeff has volunteered as a Boy Scout leader for 14 years and served as the District Boy Scout Leader for 30 years. He has been involved with the Sayre Rotary Club for 17 years and has served as President of the organization. He has also volunteered his time doing work for the Sayre Theatre and The Sayre Historical Society. His accomplishments include hosting Foreign Exchange Students for 17 years. Jeff was a major contributor during the 2011 Flood.

Alaire Smith-Miller, DVM: Animal Care Sanctuary:

Alaire is the Veterinarian for the Animal Care Sanctuary. She has worked there for the past 2 years. She was formerly self-employed in Minnequa Cottage. Her volunteer experience includes the AVBA Botanical Association Vets who are herbalists for two years; AVMA Vet Medical Association for 23 years; AAEP (Equine Practitioners) for 20 years and the American Association of Shelter Vets. Her accomplishments include Equine Valedictorian and the Hutton-Riley Award at Vet School.

The 2012 Business Person of the Year will be awarded at the 17th Annual United Valley Business Banquet by the 2011 winner, Randy Williams. Nominations were mailed to all 2012 chamber members for voting. Deadline for voting is Wednesday, March 13. This year's banquet will be held on March 27 at the Best Western Grand Victorian Inn.
