Demand leads to new location dermatology practice
BIG FLATS, N.Y. - A successful dermatology practice has expanded into Big Flats, bringing 23 years of collective experience and a $200,000 investment to the community.
Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics has opened at 950 County Road 64, Suite 100. This is the clinic's second office, complementing the flagship practice in Vestal, N.Y.
"Our move to Big Flats gives us the chance to bring our brand of care, expertise and individual attention to the residents of the Elmira area," said Colleen Crandell, D.O., F.A.A.D., an owner and operator of Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics with Curt Fenkl, D.O.
Dr. Crandell and Dr. Fenkl take pride in making a positive impact on their patients with their personalized holistic approach. They are excited to bring this same level of care to new clients in the Southern Tier as well.
"In dermatology, you need to evaluate each patient individually and give them systemic and systematic treatment," said Dr. Fenkl. "We at Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics are very aggressive in our treatment to get them better. It is easy to treat serious concerns in dermatology once patients are properly seen and properly diagnosed."
The practice prides itself on prescribing the appropriate medication as necessary, and no skin complaint is ever treated as too minor.
"Aesthetic procedures and corrections like removing a mole on an eyelid can have a profound effect on the appearance and self-esteem of a patient," said Dr. Fenkl.
Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics is also diagnosing many pre-cancerous moles in teens and young adults. According to Dr. Fenkl, melanoma is the leading cause of death for young people.
One of the tools Dr. Crandell and Dr. Fenkl have at their disposal is dermoscopy, which gives visibility to the skin underneath a mole to help determine whether a biopsy is needed. Studies have shown that dermoscopy allows experienced doctors to detect melanoma in 65 to 80 percent of cases.
"We are so glad we've opened our clinic in Big Flats and have been able to make a difference already," said Dr. Fenkl. "There's a definite need. Prevention is the key to saving lives when it comes to melanoma and other afflictions. People need to be evaluated and treated individually. We have a much better chance to fix dermatological issues when our patients are properly diagnosed."
The move to Big Flats represents a sizable investment in the community, including renovations of the clinic's building and acquiring the latest technology in dermatological care.
Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics currently employs eight people in Big Flats and is aggressively adding to its staff to accommodate growth. The clinic will continue to expand with a new, larger building in Endwell to replace the Vestal office and a planned third location to open in late 2012 in Utica, N.Y.
