Environmental investigation begins
An environmental investigator has launched an independent investigation of Marcellus Shale drilling by invitation of the Marcellus Shale Oil and Gas Litigation Group.
Theodore O. Meiggs, Ph.D. of Golden, Colo., a chemist and environmental expert with over 40 years of experience in the environmental field, has spent the last three days touring oil and gas drilling areas in Northeast Pennsylvania as part of a private investigation into the effects of hydrofracking on the health and safety of local residents.
In exploring the matter, Dr. Meiggs is evaluating previously collected data and reports, as well as personally collecting his own evidence.
"I flew out here because I've been very anxious to see what's going on for myself. It's already apparent that we are facing a major environmental situation that has and will affect many people in the area. To protect human health, it is imperative that the potential impact be properly assessed and methods by which to minimize it are aggressively pursued and implemented."
Meiggs is a former assistant director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Enforcement Investigations Center and currently serves as president and senior consultant at Meiggs Environmental Consultants, Inc.
Meiggs has over 25 years of public and private analytical laboratory management experience including time spent as the director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Enforcement Investigations Center (NEIC) laboratory, the only national laboratory devoted to enforcing federal environmental regulations.
