First Citizens National Bank raises $20,000 for Haiti relief
On Tuesday, Jan. 12, a catastrophic earthquake changed forever the lives of the people in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and other settlements in the nation of Haiti. As of Feb. 12, an estimated three million people were affected by the quake, with over 200,000 dead, 300,000 injured and one million homeless. Many countries responded to appeals for humanitarian aid, pledging funds and dispatching rescue and medical teams, engineers and support personnel.
Although it has been almost two months since this tragedy, the images of devastation and human suffering cannot be forgotten and their needs remain great. In response, First Citizens National Bank began a fund raising project with the commitment to match contributions up to $5,000. The project raised $13,831.73 and First Citizens increased their $5,000 commitment to $6,168.27 for a total of $20,000.
Customers and employees filled the donation boxes. In addition, local businesses like the Rialto Theatre in Canton and our local schools held fundraisers as well. The Bradford County Regional Arts Council coordinated efforts with the Troy and Canton schools. Warren L. Miller held a coin drive. The sixth grade class of Wyalusing Elementary School challenged their school to raise $300 but well surpassed that goal raising over $1,500. The HYPE group (Helping Youth Promote Empowerment) of Rowe Jr. High School had an activity day for kids to raise money.
"I'd like to thank and congratulate all who made this fundraiser a success," stated Randall E. Black, CEO and President. "It's heartwarming to think that even though many of our residents are struggling during these tough economic times, they found a way to contribute to this worthy cause. Part of our vision has always been to exhibit social responsibility and good citizenship in our communities. I strongly believe that the success of this fundraiser is a great example of our commitment to this vision."
