Plants 'N Things, a floral shop that has served Sayre since 1981, celebrated its new ownership Thursday with a ribbon cutting.

Valerie Jacoski recently purchased the West Packer Avenue shop, beginning as owner in March. Jacoski previously served as director of the Tioga Point Museum in Athens for eight years.

"It was time to try something new," Jacoski said. "I loved the time I worked at the Tioga Point Museum and the people I met and worked with, but this opportunity came along and I couldn't pass it by."

Plants 'N Things was established in March 1981 by Helen Sisto. The store started at a location on the corner of Keystone and Madison avenues before moving to 107 W. Packer Ave. in 1985, Jacoski said.

The building formerly housed several businesses, including a bar called the Sayre Grill. There are still booths and a dance floor in the building's basement, she said.

Jacoski said she has big plans for the business and plans to expand its selection to include handcrafted gifts and baby gifts. In addition to plants, plant gardens and fairy gardens, the store will also carry quilts made by Jacoski and her friends, wreaths, birdhouses and other decorations.

Floral designer and longtime employee Gay-Dee Bloss will continue to create floral arrangements at the shop under the new management, Jacoski said.

Plants 'N Things now has a Facebook page, Jacoski said. The store also has new hours - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
