CANTON - The Canton Area School Board on Thursday approved a 2012-13 tentative budget that the district superintendent called "austere."

According to the district, the revenues equal $13.6 million and the expenses total $14.1 million with the deficit covered by the fund balance.

The district covers three counties, Bradford, Lycoming and Tioga. Here is the millage for each in the spending plan: Bradford: 32.4716, a decrease of .1665; Lycoming, 14.4134, an increase of 1.0903; and Tioga, 15.4661, an increase of .7423.

Reviewing the expenditures, it was noted that there is an increase in fixed costs in medical insurance and the retirement contribution of $239,000.

Board members Eric Anderson and Judy Sourbeer voted no. Board member Denny Sourbeer was absent.

The various other tax levies are proposed to remain the same as last year.
