CANTON - Judy Sourbeer is back on the Canton Area School Board.
Sourbeer, who previously served on the board for eight years but has been off the board the last four years, was one of three board members sworn in at Thursday's school board meeting.
In addition, Canton Elementary Principal Diane Barrett offered words of sympathy to the family of a former educator in the district who has passed away.
In addition to Sourbeer, board members Jared Wilcox and Harold Hopkins were given the oaths of office. Board member Gary Black was also to receive the oath, but he was absent from the meeting.
Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy administered the oaths.
Sourbeer, of Roaring Branch in Region III, said she is glad to be on the board again.
"I'm concerned about the education of the kids," she said.
She also wants the board and the coaches to get together to boost student participation in baseball and football. She said their participation in those sports has been declining.
She previously served as board president for six years. Sourbeer said she got off the board when former board member Bill Baker showed some interest in serving.
Baker's term expires Dec. 7, according to the district Web site, and he was commended at the meeting for the past four years he served on the board. He did not seek re-election. She replaces him.
This spring, Sourbeer was a successful write-in candidate and was on the November ballot.
As for the voters' support, she said, "They must be happy with what I do."
In addition, Duane Castle was elected president of the board and Denny Sourbeer, who is Judy Sourbeer's husband, was elected vice-president. Black was named treasurer.
In addition, Barrett offered words of condolence to the family of Suzanne Marie Seelye, 50, a lifelong and well-known resident of Canton. She passed away Tuesday at Williamsport Hospital following a lifelong battle with diabetes, according to her obituary.
The obituary notes: "An extremely dedicated educator, Suzie could be found nightly and on weekends in her classroom, preparing for the students she adored. In addition, she was actively involved with the Canton Area Education Association, serving two terms as president."
