CANTON - Several teenagers spent their Friday night at Canton High School last week wrapping presents.

The students, members of the National Honor Society at the high school, were getting the gifts ready as they helped with the "Giving Tree" program.

This year, the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce (CACC) announced it was partnering with the Canton Area School District for the program, which is sponsored by the chamber and is available to those in the school district. It allows children in need to receive a gift for Christmas.

As part of the charitable effort, the community was asked to give cash donations to the Giving Tree, and the faculty from the Canton Area School District were given the money to do the shopping for 24 families, which includes 53 children.

In addition, people in the community adopted 11 additional families through the Giving Tree, and purchased the gifts themselves, in lieu of a monetary donation.

The National Honor Society students were selected to do the wrapping of the gifts as part of their service component. The students took part last week in what was described as the First Annual NHS Wrapping Christmas Party.

NHS advisor Jeff Wynne said about 20 students were helping out.

"It's wonderful," he said. "This is what Christmas is about."

Wynne said he was impressed that the students were spending their Friday night wrapping the gifts.

"It shows a commitment."

He noted that some had even taken a break from work to help out for 15 minutes. A pizza party was held after the wrapping.

Brady Seeley, one of the students, said, "They needed people to help. I just like to volunteer my time with the National Honor Society. I try to help as much as I can." He also liked spending time with his friends.

Another student, Shannon Abercrombie, was also glad to take part.

"It makes you feel really good helping other people, and it's the time of the year to do good stuff."
