Casey: White House has U.S. attorney nominees
U.S. Sen. Bob Casey said Tuesday he and Sen. Arlen Specter have turned their recommendations for Pennsylvania's three U.S. attorney posts over to the White House.
"After many, many months of people saying, 'Have you guys done your work yet?' I can say clearly that it's in the hands of the White House," Casey said. "We're hoping that one, if not two of the three, will be in the near term. I don't know what that (near term) means."
Casey said he is hopeful the new U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania is only weeks from being named as opposed to months. He declined to name the recommended candidates.
U.S. attorneys are the chief federal prosecutors in specific territories.
Efforts to reach a White House spokeswoman were unsuccessful. Attorney Peter J. Smith, a Wilkes-Barre native who lives in Camp Hill, has emerged as the leading candidate for the Middle District post, sources have previously told The Times-Tribune.
The district covers 33 counties, including all the Northeast Pennsylvania counties. Dennis C. Pfannenschmidt is acting U.S. attorney for the district.
