Several cattle died in a cattle truck accident just before 8 a.m. Wednesday on Route 414 near the intersection with Allens Crossing Road in Franklin Township, Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Donald Stranger Sr. said.
He said a total of 26 cattle survived, but several perished, and local farmers helped emergency responders in rounding, corralling and hauling the cattle. They had to be extricated.
The driver of the truck wasn't injured in the one-vehicle accident, and the truck, which had severe damage, came to rest on its side, blocking the road and knocking out 200 feet of guardrails, Stranger said. The fire department, assisted by Memorial Ambulance and Canton Fire and Rescue, was at the scene until 1:10 p.m.
Stranger said he assumed the truck was headed to Cargill, but he couldn't say for sure.
At 8:30 a.m., PennDOT announced that Route 414 was closed due to the crash, and traffic was being detoured onto Bailey Corners Road and Route 514. At 12:45 p.m., PennDOT said Route 414 was reopened at the scene of the accident.
A state police report was not available Wednesday night.
