The cause of the fire that left a Sayre family homeless on Thursday has not been determined and is still under investigation, the Sayre fire chief said on Friday.
However, at this point, the fire is not considered to be suspicious, Sayre Fire Chief Thomas Yonkin reported.
One dog perished in the fire, which struck the two-story house located at 128 Hoover St., which is the residence of Chuck and Shannon Reid and their two children, he said.
The home was severely damaged in the fire, he said.
"Very little will be salvageable, as far as the things they own" in the home, he said.
Two dogs were rescued from the blaze by neighbors Sean Watkins and Steve Haggerty, who went through the front door and removed them from the smoky interior.
The rescued dogs are doing fine, the fire chief said.
One cat was also rescued by firefighters, he said.
The rescued cat "was very, very wet and not very active," Yonkin said. "We turned it over to the family."
However, the cat is now "doing fine," he said.
The family's second cat has not yet been located, he said.
No firefighters were injured in the blaze, he said. Yonkin said that as far as he knows, none of the neighbors were injured, either.
Yonkin said he was not sure where the Reid family is staying. The Red Cross was called in "so I assume they've been taken care of by that agency," the fire chief.
However, the Reids may be staying with local relatives, he said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the home at 12:17 p.m. on Thursday and began arriving a minute or two later, he said. But by the time firefighters arrived, the home's first and second floors were "well involved" in the blaze, Yonkin said.
No one was home when the fire broke out, the fire chief said.
Chuck Reid said the home was insured.
