WEST BURLINGTON TWP. - Maggi Frawley of Towanda is back on her feet and dancing again.
Frawley, a well-known local dance teacher with a 20-year career in show business under her belt, went through the Stepping Stones rehabilitation program at the Bradford County Manor after some health problems in early 2007 left her in a wheelchair. She was one of the people attending the Stepping Stones Rehabilitation Reunion at the Manor this week.
"One day I was teaching dancing, and I don't remember the next five days," she said. The next thing she remembered was waking up in Robert Packer Hospital. Her system had collapsed from various health problems, and physical nerve damage had left her incapacitated.
The rehabilitation program, which put her through a schedule of physical and occupational therapy, proved to be her salvation - not to mention a positive mindset. She entered the Manor in a wheelchair, and two weeks later, she left with crutches.
The Monday after she left the Stepping Stones program she walked to her dancing school and was teaching dancing again.
"I credit the help I got here," she said of the Manor. "This is a wonderful place. The physical therapy, I'm told, is the best you can get in 100 miles, and I believe that." She said she is grateful to the Manor for the help she received. She said her stay was not only helpful in getting her back on her feet; she said it was comfortable, the atmosphere was upbeat, and she was treated kindly. Thanks to the help she received, she said, now she's back full-time teaching dancing at her school, Maggi Frawley Dance and Performance Studio in Towanda.
"The experience has made my dancing school better than ever because there is such an appreciation of your feet and the things you can do, and you want to make sure you can pass it on."
Lori Foust, marketing director at the Manor, said Frawley is an example of the success of the rehabilitation program.
"People can come here, do rehabilitation, and successfully return to the community."
