DUI charges

The following people were recently charged with driving while under the influence in Bradford County:

Justin Royal Lathrop, 19, of Sayre, by Athens borough police, on March 14, on South Main Street in Athens. Lathrop has also been charged with possession of a controlled substance and careless driving. Lathrop submitted to a chemical blood test, and two cigarettes found on his person field tested positive for marijuana, police said. Lathrop has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on June 4 for his preliminary hearing.

Brett Allen Merritt, 25, of Athens, by Athens Township police, on April 15, on Riverside Drive in Athens Township. Merritt has also been charged with failure to keep right, speeding, careless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt. A blood alcohol test later revealed that Merritt's blood alcohol content was .14 percent on the day of his arrest. Merritt has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on June 5 for his preliminary hearing.

Man charged after fleeing police

An Endwell, N.Y. man was recently arrested by Athens Township police on a charge of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Corey Eugene Hulbert, 32, was also charged with retail theft, reckless driving, failing to stop at a red light, speeding, failure to display a registration plate, failure to use turn signals, failure to keep right and careless driving.

Police said Hulbert and another male removed the license plates from a gray Chevrolet Impala operated by Hulbert and then drove to the Walmart on Elmira Street, where Hulbert entered the store. Officers waited for Hulbert to exit, police said.

According to police, Hulbert exited the store and drove off in the Impala, running a red light at Elmira Street and driving off at a high rate of speed. Hulbert then drove the vehicle onto Clinton and Pennsylvania avenues without using turn signals or stopping at stop signs, police said. Hulbert's vehicle was finally stopped on Herrick Avenue, police said.

Walmart loss prevention officers told police that Hulbert was stopped trying to exit the store with a television valued at $328, according to police.

Hulbert was arraigned May 2 by Magisterial District Judge Timothy Clark and remanded to the Bradford County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Hulbert's preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 8.

Drug possession charge

An Oklahoma man was recently arrested by Sayre borough police on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Zachary Dean Hamilton, 25, of Proctor, Okla., was also charged with one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana and eight counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said Hamilton was placed under arrest while investigating a theft complaint at an apartment he was in. Police said officers found methadone pills on Hamilton's person. Marijuana, glass pipes, pill crushers, plastic tubes and a marijuana grinder were found inside the apartment, police said.

Hamilton was arraigned May 3 by Magisterial District Judge Timothy Clark and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Hamilton's preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 8.

Sayre woman charged

A Sayre woman was recently arrested by Athens borough police on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Chelsea A. Smith, 18, was found to possess a homemade pipe used to ingest marijuana. Police said Smith and a juvenile female were seen throwing the pipe out the window of a tan Oldsmobile sedan on Cooper Street on the way to Athens Area High School.

Smith's preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 5.

Man arrested in Sayre

A Towanda man was recently arrested by Sayre borough police on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Justin K. Barrowcliff, 24, was also charged with public drunkenness.

Police said officers found Barrowcliff standing in the middle of Chacona Lane, blocking traffic. Police said Barrowcliff appeared to be intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. Two empty packages of synthetic marijuana were found on Barrowcliff's person, police said.

Barrowcliff was arraigned April 27 by Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $400 bail. Barrowcliff's preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 1.
