Police Briefs

Hearing waived

Anthony Michael Bates, 19, of RR2, Box 202A, Columbia Crossroads, has waived his preliminary hearing to Bradford County Court on charges of burglary and theft of services for a reported incident that occurred between May 20 and July 30 at a garage along state Route 4013 in Smithfield Township, according to Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox's office.

He is accused of making more than $200 in unauthorized phone calls. The garage is owned by Russell Gerould, no age or address given. His straight bail was set at $85,000, and he was placed in Bradford County Correctional Facility.

Man charged

Joseph Paul Calkins Sr., 34, with a listed address of the Bradford County Correctional Facility, faces a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy in connection with a reported incident sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. July 15 at Pelton Place in Ridgebury Township, according to court papers.

Calkins, who has been convicted of two felonies in New York, attempted robbery and burglary, possessed a 30-30 rifle and a .243-caliber rifle and attempted to sell them, the papers note. Police asked him if he was aware that it's illegal to possess a firearm due to his felony convictions, and he stated that he thought the law only applied in New York, according to an affidavit.

He is charged with persons not to possess or sell firearms and false reports to law enforcement authorities. His hearing has been continued, but the date is not yet known, according to Wilcox's office. His straight bail was set at $50,000.

Man faces hearing

Thomas J. Edwards, 22, of 1400 State Route 41, Willett, N.Y., faces a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy Aug. 25 on charges of theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property for a reported incident that took place around 12:30 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008, on Mott Town Road at Route 14 in South Creek Township, according to court papers.

He is accused of taking two pit bull puppies worth about $225 belonging to Rex Peters, no age or address given, the papers note. His straight $20,000 bail wasn't posted, and he was placed in Bradford County Correctional Facility.

Man charged with DUI

Jeffery Coats, 45, of 156 E. Main St., Canton, has waived his preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy to Bradford County Court on a charge of DUI for a reported incident that occurred at 7:53 p.m. May 22 on Troy Street in Canton, according to court papers.

Following a traffic stop on Lower Mountain Road, Coat's blood-alcohol content was .237 percent, the papers note. He was also charged with a vehicle sound level charge. He was sent a summons.

Guns taken

Shelly Lynn Baltimore, 45, of 743 Stringham Rd., Gillett, faces a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy Sept. 1 on charges of theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property for a reported incident that took place July 22 and July 25 at her residence in Ridgebury Township, according to court papers.

She is accused of taking a 9 mm high point pistol and a 12-gauge Charles Dailey shotgun belonging to Scott Alan Phillips, 32, of Gillett, the papers note. She told police that, in July 2008, she gave Phillips' pistol and shotgun to a man she met in Elmira, N.Y. to buy drugs. Her unsecure bail was set at $30,000.

DUI hearing waived

Joseph Paul Calkins, 34, of 121 Pelton Place, Gillett, has waived his preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on charges of DUI for a reported incident that took place at 1:41 p.m. July 15 at Pelton Place in Ridgebury Township, according to Wilcox's office.

Calkins was also charged with driving without registration, driving without a valid driver's license, and driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, according to court papers. His straight $5,000 bail wasn't posted, and he was placed in Bradford County Correctional Facility.

Money taken

Thomas Andrew Krise, 20, of RR1, Box 5124, Canton, faces a preliminary hearing at 3:45 p.m. Aug. 25 before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on a charge of theft for a reported incident at 6:45 p.m. June 25 at 220 Redington Ave. in Troy, according to court papers.

Viola Slater, no age given, of 220 Redington Ave., told police that Krise took more than $3,000 from her lock box in her bedroom, according to an affidavit. His unsecure bail was set at $5,000.

Man charged with disorderly conduct

Shawn David Fleming, 19, of 204 Redington Ave., Troy, faces a preliminary hearing at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 25 before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on charges of disorderly conduct and false reports to law enforcement authorities for a report incident at 6:17 p.m. June 25 in Troy, according to court papers.

Fleming is accused of trying to strike Thomas Andrew Krise, no age or address given, and grabbing the door of his vehicle as Krise drove away, the papers note. He also reported that he was dragged down the road by Krise's truck, knowing that it did not occur, the papers note. He was sent a summons.

Hearing waived on DUI

Sheldon Keith Robbins, 20, of RR3 Box 253, Columbia Crossroads, has waived his hearing before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy to Bradford County Court on charges of DUI, a lane violation, driving at a speed greater than reasonable and prudent based on conditions and actual and potential hazards, and careless driving for a reported incident at 12:47 a.m. June 27 on state Route 4016 in Columbia Township, according to court papers.

The alcohol concentration is Robbins' blood/breath was .029 percent, the papers note.

Man faces hearing on theft

Arnold E. Rumsey, 54, of 2423 Ayers Rd., Gillett, faces a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on charges of theft of services/acquisition of services and criminal mischief for a reported incident that took place around 10 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008, on Ayers Road in South Creek Township, according to court papers.

Rumsey is accused of tampering with an electrical meter at his residence and turning the power back on without asking, paying or obtaining consent from the power company, the papers note. Wilcox said his hearing was continued, but the date isn't yet known. His unsecure bail was set at $30,000.

Criminal mischief in Cherry Twp.

At around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at state Route 87 and Gainer Hill Road in Cherry Twp., Sullivan County, someone shot a pellet of BB gun near the residence of Ray John McDonald Jr. 38, according to state police at Laporte. There was no damage to McDonald's property, police said.

Burglary in Burlington Twp.

Between 8 and 10 p.m. on Aug. 7, a burglary occurred at a residence on Shotgun Hollow Road in Burlington Twp., according to state police at Towanda.

Charges of burglary, receiving stolen property, theft of a motor vehicle and theft by unlawful taking have been filed at juvenile probation against a 16-year-old Ulster juvenile in connection with the incident, police said.

A Kawasaki KX85 dirt bike and a Mongoose Rebel BMX bicycle were allegedly stolen, police said. The victims of the burglary were a 40-year-old Ulster man and an 11-year-old juvenile male, also of Ulster, police said, and both items were returned to the victims.

Also recovered during the investigation was an ATV belonging to a separate victim, police said.

Burglary in New Albany

Between 10 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 11, Kramer's Mountain House Inn on Hatch Hill Road in New Albany was broken into, according to state police at Towanda.

The actors gained forcible entry into the structure by breaking glass in an exterior window, police said. While inside, the actors damaged a video game machine and jukebox and removed the proceeds contained within, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call state police at Towanda at (570) 265-2186.

Waverly woman charged in assault

Michelle Renea Rosh, 35, of Waverly, is charged with two counts of simple assault, harassment and criminal trespass in connection with an incident that occurred at around 7:21 p.m. on July 28 on Tulip Lane in Sayre, according to court documents filed at Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw's office.

Rosh is accused of striking Stanley Platt multiple times about the face and head, as well as digging her fingernails into one of Platt's ears, the documents stated. Platt suffered a split nose, swollen lip and cuts to his ear as a result, court papers stated.

Rosh is also accused of remaining on the property of Stanley and Christina Platt after being told by both to leave, the papers stated.

A preliminary hearing has been set for 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 22 for Rosh to answer to the charges.

Two charged in theft of drugs

Lisa Myers, 39, and Mitzi A. Taylor, 38, both of Sayre, have been charged in connection with an incident occurring at around 6:51 p.m. on Aug. 16 at the Best Western in Sayre, according to court documents filed at Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw's office.

Myers faces charges of burglary, criminal conspiracy, theft, receiving stolen property and acquisition by misrepresentation while Taylor faces charges of receiving stolen property, acquisition by misrepresentation and criminal conspiracy, the documents stated.

According to affidavits:

Police responded on Sunday to the Best Western in Sayre for a reported burglary. A person renting a room at the Best Western told police that seven 20-mg Oxycontin and eight .325-mg. Percocet pills were missing from bottles in his room.

Myers, a housekeeper at the Best Western, allegedly told police that she had taken the pills from the room. Myers also allegedly told police that she had taken the pills for Taylor, who was also a housekeeper at the hotel.

Myers also allegedly told police that she and Taylor had used some of the pills while on break.

There were 11.5 Clonzepams, which Myers allegedly told police she obtained from another room in the hotel, four Oxycontins and 1.5 Percocets retrieved and entered into evidence from the incident, police said.

Preliminary hearings have been set for Taylor and Myers on Aug. 25, with Taylor's scheduled for 10:15 a.m. and Myers at 10:30 a.m.

Milan man charged with theft

Justin Dean Phillips, 21, of Milan, faces charges of terroristic threats and theft in connection with an incident that occurred at around 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 15 on Weiser Lane in Athens Township, according to court documents filed at Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw's office.

According to an affidavit:

Police responded on Aug. 15 to Weiser Lane for a reported fight. Once on scene, police say they learned that Phillips had threatened a man and the man's sister with violence. The male victim in the incident reported to police that a car stereo valued at $450 had been stolen from his car the previous night. Phillips later allegedly admitted to taking the stereo and selling it, police said.

A preliminary hearing has been set for 10 a.m. on Aug. 25 for Phillips to answer the charges.

Public housing for the elderly in Bradford County to become smoke-free

SAYRE - In a controversial move, the Bradford County Housing Authority plans to make its apartment buildings for the elderly and disabled in Bradford County smoke-free, effective July 1, 2010. The new policy, which would affect the occupants of 400 apart
