Police Briefs
Fugitive charged
A Waverly man was recently arrested by village police as a fugitive from justice.
According to information from village police, Gerald Edmond Sutton, 45, was wanted by the Wyoming County, Pa. Sheriff's Office for charges of driving under the influence and careless driving. The incident occurred in 2009, police said.
Police said they arrested Sutton at 6:50 p.m. Feb. 6 following investigation into a 911 hang-up call.
Sutton was arraigned in Village of Waverly court and remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail, police said.
South Waverly man charged
A South Waverly man was recently arrested by Sayre borough police on a charge of driving under the influence.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Manley Charles Chapman, 23, was also charged with fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to obey maximum speed limits, failure to obey stop or yield signs, violating restrictions on alcoholic beverages, failure to remain on the right side of the roadway and careless driving.
Police said officers witnessed a tan Chevrolet sedan operated by Chapman running a stop sign at 2:43 a.m. Feb. 12 at North Thomas Avenue and East Lockhart Street. The vehicle was slow to stop for officers, and once it pulled to the side of South Thomas Avenue, Chapman exited the vehicle and fled, police said.
Chapman ran about 50 yards before officers tackled him, police said.
While running, Chapman threw a small green and silver baggie later found to contain synthetic marijuana, police said. In addition, police found an empty package of bath salts on Chapman's person, police said.
Chapman was arraigned Feb. 12 by Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $70,000 bail. Chapman's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.
Two charged following fight
Two men were recently arrested by Athens Township police following an altercation at a bar in the township.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, James I. Gray, Jr., 31, of Athens and Tyler Randall Lumley, 28, of Elkland were each charged with simple assault causing bodily injury, disorderly conduct and harassment by physical contact.
Police said they responded to a report of a large fight at 1:42 a.m. Jan. 26 at Beeman's Restaurant on Elmira Street. Upon arrival, police found one male victim unconscious and bleeding from the head and another male victim suffering from broken ribs and facial lacerations, police said. Gray and Lumley admitted to assaulting the men, according to police.
Gray and Lumley will face preliminary hearings on Mar. 20.
Tip jar stolen in Sayre
Sayre borough police recently filed charges of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property against a Sayre man.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Shane M. Rowe, 38, is accused of removing cash from a tip jar Feb. 11 from the New Kam Bo restaurant on Desmond Street. An employee of the store estimated that over $50 had been taken, police said.
Rowe's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 13.
Sayre woman charged
A Sayre woman was recently charged by borough police with furnishing alcoholic beverages to minors.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Alyssa Ann Guthrie, 21, furnished alcohol to several minors inside a hotel room she rented at the Best Western Grand Victorian Inn on Spring Street.
Guthrie's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 13.
Man charged in Sayre
An Elmira, N.Y. man was recently arrested by Pennsylvania state police on two counts of delivery of a controlled substance.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Gerald A. Derr, 50, was also charged with two counts of criminal use of a communication facility.
Police said Derr sold percocet pills Jan. 29 and again on Feb. 13 in an Elmira Street parking lot.
Derr was arraigned Feb. 13 and released from the Bradford County Jail on non-monetary bail conditions. Derr's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.
Retail theft charge
A Spencer, N.Y. woman was recently arrested by Athens Township police on a charge of retail theft.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Janemarie Burke, 46, attempted to remove $193.27 worth of merchandise from the Walmart on Elmira Street on Feb. 15.
Burke was arraigned Feb. 15 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Burke's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.
