Man charged with disorderly conduct

A Towanda man was recently ordered incarcerated in lieu of bail, on a charge of disorderly conduct.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, John Lawless Sterns, 49, has also been charged by Towanda police with defiant trespass, criminal trespass, and public drunkenness.

Police reported responding to 12 York Ave. on March 22 for a fight in progress. When they arrived at the address, according to the report, members of Towanda police observed Sterns yelling at a state trooper who was also at the scene.

Sterns was handcuffed in the interest of public safety as well as the officers at the scene. While in the process of detaining Sterns, police said, they detected a strong smell of alcohol on his person.

Police said they learned from witnesses at the scene that Sterns had come onto 12 York Ave. and started a fight with two people. One of the witnesses said Sterns threatened his life, calling him vulgar names, and started to push him.

Police said they learned later from the caretaker of 12 York Ave. that Sterns has been told multiple times in the last month, including in the last few days, to stay off the property.

Sterns was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox, who ordered the defendant incarcerated in lieu of $25,000 bail. His preliminary hearing before Judge Clark has been scheduled for March 26.
