Man arrested on warrant

An Elmira, N.Y. man was recently arrested by Tioga County, N.Y. sheriff's deputies on a warrant.

According to information from the sheriff's department, Mark A. Silvia, 41, was arrested Sept. 20 on a bench warrant issued by Barton Town Court. Police said Silvia failed to appear in court to answer petit larceny and harassment charges.

Silvia was arraigned in Town of Nichols Court and remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail or $5,000 bond. Silvia is scheduled to appear Sept. 25 in Town of Barton Court.

Burglary charges filed

An Ulster man was recently arrested by Athens Borough police on a charge of burglary.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Gary Allen Bennett Jr., 42, was also charged with criminal trespassing, criminal mischief by damaging property, possession of drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness.

Police said Bennett attempted to enter a Judge Herrick Street residence, then forced entry into the garage. Once inside, police said Bennett tipped over a refrigerator and destroyed several items within the garage. Bennett did approximately $1,500 worth of damage to the garage, police said.

According to police, Bennett then fled on foot toward the Athens river bridge, then was transported by vehicle to a point on Sheshequin Road. Police said Bennett then walked along Sheshequin Road on foot, staggering in and out of traffic until police found him and took him into custody. A package of synthetic marijuana was found on Bennett's person, police said.

Bennett was arraigned Sept. 25 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. Bennett's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 2.
