Person suffers major injury in crash
State police at Towanda said Joey L. Carey, 22, of Gillett, suffered a major injury in a one-vehicle crash May 7 on Route 14 in South Creek Township.
Police said he was traveling south and smoking a cigarette, which fell to the floor in front of him under the steering wheel. According to police, he took his eyes off the road in an attempt to retrieve the cigarette and subsequently the vehicle traveled into the western berm. When he brought his attention back to the road, he tried to bring the vehicle back into the southern travel lane, but over-corrected. Police said the vehicle went back onto the southern lane of travel momentarily, but left the roadway back into the western berm. The right front fender area struck a mailbox and the concrete pad that was holding the mailbox in place, police said.
According to police, after striking the concrete pad and mailbox, the vehicle began to spin clockwise toward the passenger door. Police said the vehicle rolled about one and a half times before coming to rest on the driver's side door and facing north. Police said Carey was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the driver's side window of the vehicle. Both the driver and the vehicle came to rest in the front yard of the property located at 33513 Route 14, police said. Police said that Carey was taken by South Creek Township ambulance to Arnot Ogden Medical Center in New York for further medical evaluation and appeared to have a broken right leg at the scene. The vehicle was towed form the scene by Keleher Towing and the South Creek Township Fire Department assisted at the crash scene, police said. Police said both the property owner and the driver were issued Notice of Crash Investigation Forms. Carey was issued multiple traffic citations, police said.
