Crash closes road

A bad crash on state Route 706 in Stevens Township closed the highway on Monday for several hours as rescue crews worked at the scene.

According to preliminary information obtained from police scanner reports, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. Monday near Chamberlain's Body Shop. Reports indicated that three vehicles were involved, and one of the vehicles caught fire. No one was inside the vehicle when the fire broke out, according to reports. Five people were reported injured.

The crash caused PennDOT to close the road, about a quarter mile west of Clapper Hill Road near Stevensville, with no detour. PennDOT reported around 4:35 p.m. Monday that the road was expected to remain closed for another hour.

State police are handling the investigation, but no report was available as of 9 p.m. on Monday.

And pray tell why was there no detour? Because there are no roads to Camptown usable for a detour? Drivers should have been guided over usable roads - the roads south of Stevensville are not fit for man nor beast.
