Crash in Towanda Township kills one
TOWANDA TOWNSHIP - A two-vehicle accident Tuesday evening at the intersection of U.S. Route 220 and state Route 2027 in Towanda Township, claimed the life of one person, the assistant North Towanda fire chief said.
The accident involved a collision between a pickup truck and an RV, which was towing a car at the time, North Towanda Assistant Fire Chief Gerald Sheets said.
The person was died was driving the pickup truck, Sheets said.
After the collision, the RV and the vehicle it was towing traveled down an embankment off the east side of Route 220 and then came to rest.
The pickup, which sustained severe damage to its driver's side, came to rest off the west side of Route 220.
There was debris from the accident strewn over the highway.
The accident occurred at 6:45 p.m., authorities said.
The people in the RV were not injured, Sheets said.
"They walked out" of the RV, he said.
There were no passengers in the pickup truck, he said.
The accident shut down traffic on Route 220 in both directions. Detours were set up to route traffic around the accident scene.
The identity of the deceased was unavailable from the authorities as of late Tuesday night, as well as further information from the state police.
