Driver suffers minor injuries
The driver in the dump truck crash at 9 a.m. Monday on Fallbrook Road in Troy Township lost control of his vehicle due to brake failure, according to state police at Towanda.
Police issued a report on the accident Wednesday, saying the driver, Jack Shumway, 31, of Rome, who was driving a 2006 Mack Granite CV700, was traveling east when he lost control due to brake failure and exited the northern edge of the road, struck an embankment, and flipped over, striking multiple trees. The truck came to rest on its side.
Jack Seeley, a foreman with the state Department of Transportation, said the driver was "real lucky" in that he was able to escape.
Reports from the scene were that he was able to climb out of the vehicle moments after the truck left the road and overturned. Police said he suffered minor injuries. The truck, which had to be removed in a towing operation that closed down the road until around 5 p.m., had disabling damage.
Seeley said the Bishop Bros. truck was loaded with waste from a gas well and it had spilled on the ground as a result of the crash.
When asked for comment, Daniel Spadoni, community relations coordinator with the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), said: "We were notified of the Bishop Brothers dump truck accident on Monday, but our assistance was not requested as the environmental impacts were minimal."
A representative for Bishop Bros. could not be reached for comment as to what type of waste was involved or for information about the clean-up.
