Epiphany School celebrates 80 years
FOR THE REVIEW
Students, parents, friends and alumni gathered to celebrate the 80th anniversary Mass of Epiphany School on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Father Andrew Hvozdovic welcomed those who gathered for this special occasion. Among those present was the President of the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Sister Mary Persico. Other members of the IHM Leadership Team included Sisters Mary Jo Gallagher, Barbara Jablonski, Kathryn Clauss, Susan Hadzima and Amy Zychal.
The original school building opened its doors the first time on Aug. 27, 1929 under the leadership of the late Rev. James Houlihan. The original faculty consisted of three sisters. The enrollment for the first year was 133 students in six grades.
As the building began to show signs of deterioration, plans for a new school building were made. On April 22, 1963, the ground was blessed at the present site; and on June 4, 1964, the cornerstone was blessed. The new school building was formally opened and dedicated on Aug. 31, 1964, by the late Most Reverend Jerome Hannon, Bishop of Scranton at the time. The present school was built at a cost of $413,667, debt free.
Many things have changed at Epiphany School over the years. One thing that has remained constant is the dedication of the faculty, parents, parishioners and friends.
