False reports investigated in Canton
Canton Police are investigating an e-mail sent out Thursday claiming that a student brought a gun to Canton High School in an attempt to shoot another student.
Canton Area School District Superintendent Matt Gordon said the claim made in the e-mail was not legitimate.
In a formal statement Thursday, Gordon said, "Someone has e-mailed WNEP claiming there was a shooting at the school and some other person has information on their Facebook page indicating that a student brought a gun to school today."
He noted that The Daily Review also received the e-mail.
The e-mail received by the Review stated that, "From what texts and phone calls we are getting from our children, some kid brought a gun to school today at the Canton High School in an attempt to shoot another kid." The person who sent the e-mail did not provide their full name. The e-mail only listed a first initial and a last name, "D Buck," and the person did not identify him or herself following an e-mail request from the Review.
Gordon stated about the claims, "This information is totally false." Gordon noted the school district is also investigating the false reports.
Gordon continued by noting that at around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, Pennsylvania State Police investigated an alleged weapon possession by a student off campus.
"As a precaution, that student was searched and investigated this morning," he said. "There is no weapon on school property and there is no perceived threat to any students here on school property. The alleged incident is still under investigation by the Canton Borough Police, as well as the false reports."
On Thursday afternoon, Canton Police Chief Doug Seeley said he was notified of the e-mail by WNEP. He said police are investigating the source of the e-mail. It's not known who sent it, he added.
Seeley said he went to the school to investigate, and looked for weapons, but he said nothing was found.
In addition, Seeley said there had been an incident at the high school on Tuesday in which two students were arguing at the school, which escalated and one student threatened the other. He said police are also investigating this.
No weapons have been found on these students, he said.
Seeley said the report about the incident off-campus turned out to be unfounded.
