Sayre Fire Department responded to a dryer fire Wednesday that broke out in the basement of a residence on North Lehigh Avenue.

Sayre Fire Chief Thomas Yonkin reported that firefighters were dispatched at 10:13 a.m. to a two-and-a-half story home at 601 N. Leigh Ave. Crews discovered flames showing from an electric dryer in the basement, Yonkin said.

"The fire was extinguished by one two-inch handline (hose)," Yonkin reported. "We probably used less than

25 gallons of water."

The burning clothes in the dryer produced quite a bit of smoke that spread throughout the first and second floors, Yonkin said. Firefighters ventilated the smoke from the building. Fire damage was contained to the dryer itself which, along with the clothes, was destroyed by the blaze. There was some minimal heat damage to pipe insulation above the dryer, Yonkin reported.

The building is owned by Mary and Joseph Sturzen from Athens and is insured, the chief said. The first floor was occupied by Kristy Arnold and Tom Simonds. The second floor apartment was occupied by William Frisbie and Lauren Campbell. Neither of the two occupants were insured, the chief said.

"Fortunately the fire was kept to the dryer and the house can still be used," Yonkin reported.

Sayre FD was assisted by Athens Borough Fire Department and Greater Valley EMS including its air truck. All units were back in service at 11:35 a.m.
