TOWANDA - A fire broke out Thursday afternoon in Suddenly Wadlington's house, which she rents at 307 Poplar St. in Towanda, while she was sleeping.

Luckily, she said, Mike Longcoy, a handyman employed by her landlords, arrived at the home to finish replacing a door on the front of her house, and he smelled the smoke.

Longcoy yelled up to Wadlington, waking her up, and they found that the smoke was coming from the basement, Wadlington said.

Wadlington, who lives in the home with her two children, ages 7 and 13, said the ground floor of the house was filled with smoke when she went downstairs.

Towanda Fire Chief Bill Roof said the fire caused "hardly any damage."

The fire was mainly confined to a pile of old clothes in a waste basket in the basement, he said.

He said he did not find any damage to the structure of the house itself.

No one was injured in the fire, he said.

The fire was reported at 2:16 p.m., authorities said.

The fire was caused by an electrical malfunction, Towanda fire officials said.
