Fire destroys Powell home
POWELL - A mid-afternoon fire Sunday destroyed a two-story single-family residence in the village of Powell in Monroe Township.
Firefighters responded to the call around 3 p.m. Sunday, said Monroe Hose Company Fire Chief Paul Bump. The fire was fully involved when firefighters first arrived, Bump said, and was brought under control in about an hour and a half. Water was brought in by tankers to combat the fire.
Around 60 firefighters from the Monroeton, Towanda, Canton, Wysox, North Towanda, New Albany and Franklindale fire departments responded to the blaze, Bump said.
The house was owned by Dale Stranger, who is a firefighter with the Franklindale Fire Department, Bump said. Stranger and his wife and two children resided in the home, he said.
No one was injured in the fire, he said, and the home was insured.
The fire started as an electrical problem with the home's furnace, Bump said. Stranger's wife was home at the time the fire started, he said. Bump said he believed the home had an oil-fired furnace.
The cause of the fire will be investigated in the next few days, he said; the fire was not suspicious.
Bump said the Red Cross responded to the scene, and he believed the Strangers were staying with family.
