Football volunteers, coaches hired in Canton
CANTON - The Canton Area School Board approved a slew of football program volunteers at its meeting Thursday.
At its regular monthly meeting, the board approved the following additions to the volunteer list for football, pending completion of all paperwork: Jake Shaffer, Denny Foust, Dave Cochran, Reese Holmes, Brandon Kutz, Tim Ward, Matt Machmer, Tyler Sechrist, Ryan VanNoy, Greg Bellows, Jason Foust, Gary Gleckner, Tyrell Wheeler, Evan Perry, and Scott Rockwell.
The long list of volunteers made an impression on board president Jared Wilcox, who commented that it looked there was "almost one for every player."
When asked for comment, district business manager Mark Jannone thought the reason for so many volunteers was "probably a reflection of the coaches" and their efforts to revive interest in the program.
In addition, the board approved the following new football coaches for the 2013-14 school year, pending completion of paperwork: Damon Perry, Assistant Varsity Football Coach; Guy Kapichok, Junior Varsity Football Coach; Lyle Wesneski, Assistant Junior Varsity Football Coach; and Lucas Bailey, Junior High Head Football Coach.
The board's action came in the wake of the hiring last month of Jay Perry as varsity football coach. At the time, Perry expressed great hopes for the program.
"I'd like to see the stands full again, I'd like to see people excited about Canton football, and I hope we're on the way to doing that right now," he told the board in January.
Several track volunteers were also approved. They are: Ron Kirby, Steve Williams, Amanda Castle, Jennifer Swody, Shane Wilber, Melissa Proseus, and Megan Peterson.
The one non-sports volunteer approved was Trudy Moyer, for elementary class/library.
Also under personnel, the board took the following action:
- approved the hiring of Tina Tillotson, paraprofessional, effective Feb. 18, at $8.63 per hour plus benefits
- approved the following additions to the 2012-13 Co-Curricular Pay (Non-Sports) List:
Jessica Watson, Student Assistance Program (SAP) Chairperson; Debra Keppler, SAP Member; Kathy Coleman, SAP Member; and Richard Harstead, SAP Member
- approved the requested allocation of the Junior High Wrestling coach stipend as follows: Chris Landis, $2,242; and Dylan Killian, $1,000
- approved the FMLA request for Joanne Laverty, elementary guidance counselor, for up to 8 weeks beginning Feb. 1.
Another personnel item involved approving the following additions to the substitute list, pending completion of all paperwork: Teresa Allen, guidance counselor, retroactive to Feb. 4; and Jerikah Holmes, RN. Both were approved.
The motion to approve Allen, however, was handled separately.
On the vote, board member Ryan Allen abstained because he is Teresa Allen's husband. All other board members voted yes, with board vice president Denny Sourbeer absent.
