Former Towanda resident Helen Van Orden, 79, was killed at her home in Manatee, Fla. in an apparent burglary last week, according to a report from the Bradenton Herald.

The following information has been obtained from the newspaper:

Van Orden was found dead by her son on Friday afternoon inside her apartment.

The alleged killer, 32-year-old Richard Wayne Matthews Jr., was arrested Saturday and is being held at the Manatee County jail without bond.

Court records show Matthews has been involved in about 30 separate cases over the last 13 years, including a 2012 felony battery charge.

An autopsy revealed Van Orden died of homicidal violence.

Van Orden worked in Florida as a part-time housekeeper.

Police said Matthews told three people that he killed Van Orden, two of whom have agreed to provide police with sworn statements.
