Fun and games for teens in Towanda

TOWANDA - On the doors of the Towanda Public Library Tuesday afternoon and evening, a sign noted that the library was open exclusively to teens.

Inside, board games like Life, Scrabble, Sorry, and Monopoly were stacked on a table. At another table, some teenagers gathered around for a card game.

It was the first-ever Teen Game Night from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

June Houghtaling, director of the library, noted that the library has a Teen Advisory Group, and the event was one of its first activities.

She said the Teen Game Night gave the kids something to do for free locally on their winter school break. No admission was charged.

Houghtaling also thought it benefited the teens because she said gaming boosts skills in other areas.

In addition, she hoped that bringing teenagers into the library would help the library get a better attendance in this age group.

Alejandro Seda, who serves on the Teen Advisory Group, thought the Teen Game Night was great. He said they've been planning it for about a month.

Another member of the Teen Advisory Group, Meredith Guffey, also said the Teen Game Night was good.

"It gets teens together," she said.

Houghtaling said about six teenagers attended on Tuesday night. She thought the first event was a success.

She said they are hoping to get teenagers to take part in the activity in the future. Another Teen Game Night is planned for the next school break. Houghtaling said she is looking forward to the next one.
