ATHENS - Girl Scouts from several local troops learned emergency response techniques on Saturday at the Sixth Annual Girl Scout Fair at Harlan Rowe Junior High School.
According to event organizer Karen Brennan, Girl Scouts from the Six Pines Service Unit - which includes Sayre, Epiphany, Ridgebury, Smithfield, Bentley Creek, Athens and Litchfield - as well as scouts from the Waverly Service, participated in the event. Also helping to organize the event was Deanna Hovan.
At this year's event, Brennan said, the Sullivan Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross provided stations and instructors to teach the scouts various aspects of emergency preparedness. Among the subjects covered, Brennan said, included first aid, CPR, and search and rescue.
During the morning the younger Girl Scouts - the Daisies and the Brownies - attended the event, while the afternoon was reserved for the Juniors, Cadets and Seniors.
"This morning we had the Athens Township firefighters come in and demonstrate fire extinguishers and equipment," Brennan explained. "They also brought in a small rescue truck."
"The girls don't actually receive a certificate, but they do become aware of how to do CPR," Brennan continued. Groups who participated in the event via the Sullivan Trail Chapter of The American Red Cross included the Bradford County Citizens Corps., the Bradford County Animal Response Team, and the Community Emergency Response Team.
"All of this taught today will go along with the with the girls' badge works," Brennan said.
