Thanksgiving kicks-off the holiday season as a time to give thanks, spend time with family and friends and think about our blessings. It's also a time of year when many people spread around their good fortune and donate to charitable causes.

We know better than most how tough it can be to recover from a natural disaster's devastation. Over a year later many people in the Southern Tier have not fully recovered. When Tropical Storm Lee took our homes and businesses, many people from all corners of the state chipped in and lent a helping hand.

Now it's our time to return that generosity.

If you're considering making charitable donations this holiday season, please keep in mind our neighbors who are suffering from the wrath of hurricane Sandy. Thousands are displaced, some still don't have power. We know how unbelievably difficult rebuilding can be, so it is important for us as New Yorkers to step up and help each other when we can.

Below are a few charities that are helping the victims' of hurricane Sandy:

The American Red Cross: www.redcross.org/hurricane-sandy

Feeding America: www.feedingamerica.org/

United Way of New York City: www.unitedwaynyc.org/

These are just a few of the charities that are contributing to hurricane Sandy relief efforts. There are many more to choose from if you'd like to help out. I hope that everyone has a happy and safe start to their holiday season.
