Compromises in the $1.8 million 1989 budget for Sayre led to the adoption of the budget by a 5-2 vote, overriding a veto by Sayre Mayor Nicholas Chacona.

About 80 concerned New Albany and surrounding area residents attended a meeting held recently concerning the formation of a home for troubled adults ages 18-25.

Towanda Memorial Hospital recently sponsored an American Red Cross Bloodmobile with 39 pints of blood being collected from 43 registered donors.

50 years ago - 1964

At the January meeting of the Monroe Borough Council the newly elected councilmen, William Shaw, Ralph Elliott and Michael Elchak, were sworn in by Mayor Kennethy Owelett.

Lavern Root of East Towanda, official weather observer here, reports that the maximum temperature for December was 52 degrees on the 8th while the minimum was 12 below on the 31st.

The Troy Local of the Dairy-men's League held its annual meeting at the Troy Grange Hall with Robert Turner, director from Horseheads, N.Y. as the principal speaker.

75 years ago - 1939

Towanda Rotary Club at its weekly meeting at the Methodist Church recently heard a very interesting talk on "Water and Its Value to Man," by Myron E. Shoemaker, fish protector of Laceyville.

Several Towandians leave on the Black Diamond for the inauguration at Harrisburg.

Mrs. Dennis Belcher was given a surprise party recently in honor of her birthday at the family home on William Street.

Salvage crews hoisted a downed US Airways jetliner from the Hudson River, two days after a dramatic water landing survived by everyone on board.

One year ago: Algerian helicopters and special forces stormed a gas plant in the stony plains of the Sahara to wipe out Islamist militants and free hostages from at least 10 countries. Nearly all the militants were killed; at least 40 hostages died in the standoff.
