On Jan. 19, 1960, the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and the United States of America was signed by both countries in Washington, D.C. (Domestic opposition to the treaty led to the resignation of Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi (nah-boo-soo-keh kee-shee)).

A Trivial Pursuit tournament is being held by the Friends of the Towanda Public Library to benefit the library.
Celebrating her birthday today is Bradford County Dairy Princess Wendy LaMont, daughter of Wayne and Barbara LaMont of Troy.
Two unbeaten high school teams, Waverly and Northeast Bradford, went up against each other in basketball action with Waverly coming out on top, 63-46.
50 years ago - 1960
The board of Bradford County Commissioners set up a domestic relations division of the county court, which will operate under Henry Stone of LeRoy, former county detective who is now chief probation officer.
At the annual meeting of the First Baptist Church of Troy, it was approved to get a new addition to the church. It is to be 69 feet long on the back of the church and 15 feet wide, and will provide five new classrooms.
Towanda Valley High School may soon have an athletic director. Norman Martin, high school principal, is making a survey of the salaries of coaches and athletic directors in 20 schools.
75 years ago - 1935
Al Todd, widely known catcher of the Philadelphia National League baseball team, will serve as one of the referees in Towanda's City Basketball League tournament.
M.A. Middaugh, well-known local businessman, announced that he is adding John Deere farm machinery to the lines of equipment handled by him at his local store on Main Street, Towanda.
Attorney Joseph W. Beaman of Towanda was elected chairman of the Central Bradford District General Sullivan Boy Scout Council, succeeding Stewart W. Borger of Towanda, who originally organized the district.

Ten years ago: Michael Skakel (SKAY'-kul), a nephew of Robert F. Kennedy, was charged with bludgeoning to death 15-year-old Martha Moxley in Greenwich (GREH'-nich), Conn. in 1975, when he was also 15. (Skakel was later convicted, and is appealing.)
Five years ago: Previewing his second inauguration, President George W. Bush pledged to seek unity in a nation divided by political differences, saying, "I am eager and ready for the work ahead."
One year ago: Russia and Ukraine signed a deal restoring natural gas shipments to Ukraine and paving the way for an end to the nearly two-week cutoff of most Russian gas to a freezing Europe.
