On Jan. 28, 1980, in what became known as "the Canadian Caper," six U.S. diplomats who had avoided being taken hostage at their embassy in Tehran flew out of Iran with the help of Canadian diplomats.

25 years ago - 1985

Memorial Hospital is now providing Home Health Care services.

John M. Burns of Warren Center and Lester Rosenberry III of Towanda have enrolled in the Robert Packer Hospital School of Respiratory Therapy.

Alfred M. Durand of Towanda RD 2 was elected president of the Master Farmers Association.

50 years ago - 1960

The Towanda Valley Joint High School will be represented at the All-State Region II Chorus Festival by Jacqueline Hill, Lana Holcombe and Duane Campbell.

Purchase of a three-wheeled vehicle for patrolling the parking meters is being considered by Towanda Borough.

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Huff and children, Deborah, Frank, Ethel, William, Stephen and Rebecca, were given a farewell party by the Bradford-Sullivan Counties' Pomona Grange officers, committee chairman and state deputies before they leave for Flemington, N.J.

75 years ago - 1935

Edward Hoffman, proprietor of the House of Fashion, has purchased the George V. Dayton home at 207 York Ave.

Rev. Hiram R. Bennett, rector of Christ Church, Williamsport, and formerly of Troy, has accepted a call to become Dean of St. John's Cathedral in Wilmington, Del.

A fire destroyed the Reformed Presbyterian Church and home of Prothonotary Jairus Thayer in Dushore, and threatened to wipe out much of the residential section of Dushore before the flames were brought under control.

Ten years ago: Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin, the Florida nun selected by Attorney General Janet Reno as a neutral party in the custody battle over Elian Gonzalez, sought unsuccessfully to persuade Reno to change her mind about returning the six-year-old to Cuba.

Five years ago: Iraqis overseas began three days of voting in 14 nations. Senate Democrats criticized President George W. Bush's plan to add personal accounts to Social Security and accused his administration of improperly using the Social Security Administration to promote the idea. Consumer products giant Procter and Gamble Company and Gillette Company announced a $57 billion merger.

One year ago: In a swift victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved, 244-188, a huge $819 billion stimulus bill with Republicans unanimous in opposition despite Obama's pleas for bipartisan support.
