An application the Northeast Tier Solid Waste Authority previously submitted to the Department of Environmental Resources seeking permission to have dumped at its West Burlington Township landfill site "fluff," described as being the non-metallic remnants of the vehicle-shredding process, has been withdrawn due to opposition expressed to this proposal by the Bradford County Planning Commission.

Huldah MacNett was selected as Employee of the Quarter at the Martha Lloyd School by her fellow staff members.

The following supervisors for Terry Township were elected at the recent reorganization meeting: Francis D. Hardenstine, chairman of supervisors; Kenneth L. Higley, vice chairman; Glenn S. Potter, secretary-treasurer; Walter Merritt Jr., road foreman; Russell Suydam, building inspector; Gary Potter, civil defense director.

The Good Will Fire Company recently received a check for $300 from Penelec as a contribution to the replacement of the company's equipment and building, lost in a Christmas morning fire.

Celebrating his birthday yesterday was Donald A. Stevens of Towanda, well-known insurance agent and past president of the Towanda Rotary Club.

Well known Standing Stone couple J. Willard and Juliet B. Long were recently honored on their 30th wedding anniversary.

75 years ago - 1938

Nelson C. Mullen, farmer of Forksville, has been elected chairman of the Sullivan County Agricultural Conservation Committee to serve during the coming year.

James Meadows of South Towanda has been appointed school director for Towanda Township, it was announced yesterday. In the election Ray Sickler and Edward Patterson tied. Instead of giving it to either one, it was decided to name Meadows for the post.

Towanda Borough has spent considerable money preparing the alley between the jail and Lilley laundry for use of trucks unloading at the stores along Main Street, and already some people have started dumping ashes and garbage there. Burgess C.S. Lilley said last night this cannot be tolerated. If people persist in dumping there, prosecutions will be started and fines assessed.

Second-ranked LSU defeated No. 1 Ohio State, 38-24, in the BCS championship game played in New Orleans. Philip Agee, a renegade CIA agent whose naming of operatives led to a law against exposing spies, died in Cuba at age 72.

One year ago: Three days before the New Hampshire primary, Mitt Romney brushed aside rivals' criticism in the opening round of a weekend debate doubleheader that left his Republican presidential campaign challengers squabbling among themselves and unable to knock the front-runner off stride.
